CYCLING WHANGANUI TRACK ETIQUETTE & RULES
To ensure the safety of all riders on the Velodrome, protection of this incredible asset and enable a positive experience for all who visit, please respect and adhere to the following track etiquette and rules.
- Always ride in an anticlockwise direction.
- Always look before you move and then only move when it is safe. This includes riding, crossing the track, coaching, officiating & supporting.
- The track must be completely dry before any bikes are permitted on the track boards – no riding is permitted in the rain/wet.
- Riders must wear suitable clothing for cycling including covered shoes and tops that cover shoulders. Gloves are recommended.
- Safety approved helmets must be worn at all times when a bike is making forward progress.
- Bikes must be mechanically sound and tubular tyres must be securely affixed to the wheel rims.
- Coaches, supporters and officials must wear covered shoes when assisting riders.
- Any attachments, such as power meters or speedometers must be securely attached and not visible to the rider.
- Wrist watches are not permitted while on the track.
- Music players or radio communication systems must not be used while on the track.
- Food and drink must remain in the infield and not be consumed on the track.
- Once racing or training has commenced the back straight gate is not to be used for crossing the track. Please use the tunnel when riders are on the track.
- The back straight gate must be kept closed at all times when riders are on the track.
- Avoid using cleats as much as possible on the track.
- Track bikes can be ridden anywhere on the track. Other bikes can utilise the concrete apron, blue band, pole line or as directed by a Club official.
- Do not change any pedals, wheels or gears on Club bikes without permission from a Club official.
- Only certified motorbikes and accredited drivers are permitted to motorpace riders.
- Keep speed up on the bankings.
- While warming up or riding slower stay above the stayers (blue) line.
- While practicing standing starts, have a spotter notifying riders of stationery riders and handlers being on the track. Using a red flag is helpful.
- A cone placed on the track indicates the riding boards are closed. Do not enter the track.
- Riders should have a minimum of one other person on site while training.

Front Straight Start/Finish Line, Clock Tower side of the Track
Pole Line/Datum The black line determining the length of a track.
Stayers Line Blue line in the middle of track. During warm-up and training events, slower riders are expected to stay above this line, leaving the lower part of the track for fast training.
Sprinters line The red line above the pole line. It is used to define the sprinter’s lane.
Sprinters lane The lane is the area between the pole and sprinters lines. Is used to help ensure safe sprinting on the track.
Pursuit Line A red line at the center of each straight. Is the start and finish line for pursuit events and teams sprint.
Cote d’Azur/Blue Band A blue painted area inside the track. Used to access the real track surface and for safety. Not a part of the official cycling surface.
Apron The concrete flat area, adjacent to the racing surface of the track. Used as a transition for getting on and off the track safely.
200m line A coloured line perpendicular to the track. Indicates 200 meters to the finish line. Used for sprint events timing.
Finish line A white band with a central black line perpendicular to the track. Is the finish for all disciplines except pursuit events and teams sprint.
